Whole-House Interior Paint Color

Our 1890’s farm house with it’s additions and many functions needs something to make it feel cohesive. I’ve never tried a whole-house interior paint color before, but I think I’m about to!

When we arrived at Rock Haven while looking for a new home, all it took for me was about 25 feet. I walked in the front door and looked around at the living room. I saw the very tall windows with gorgeous trim and the entry into the kitchen with a transom window. I walked into a 1980s kitchen and could see from there into another four rooms in the house. And I was completely in love. It was more square footage than we would ever need, with rooms and amenities that were fabulous but not necessary. And it was actually a very hard decision for Chad and I as a couple.

Why Would You Consider Painting Your Entire House One Color?

Yeah, exactly what I would have asked anyone who mentioned this prior to 2019. But when we looked at this home, there was just SO MUCH going on. An 1880's farmhouse, modernized and expanded to more than twice the original square footage! And yes, 90% of the rooms were wallpapered. I know that wallpaper had its day. I know that it's actually making at least a bit of a comeback. And there are some that I love so much, I'm considering using them-- don't tell my husband!

I think the key that made me decide on a whole-house color is that I wanted to make sure that the beautiful original AND the added rooms and functionality would blend as seamlessly as possible. After walking through and living in the space, I knew that the wall color scheme would do wonders for making the whole house blend. I love colors, and I haven't shied away from dark or daring in the past. but I decided the best possible course for this house would be first bringing it all together and THEN deciding how to make it stand out.

Gray? Is a Color Like Repose Gray Really the Best You Can Do?

I KNOW!! The only other time I've used a gray on walls was to sell a place and give it some neutral glamour. But there are so many rooms, so many walls, and so many other opportunities to pull color into the space, it just makes sense. In addition, I needed to find a gray that made the honey oak trim glow and show off the amazing workmanship.

What are your thoughts on a whole-house color or a house paint scheme? Have you successfully implemented this idea? Have you considered it? I'd love to hear what you think-- and see pictures!!
