ONE WHOLE YEAR?? Seriously, who would have imagined we would be where we are today one year ago? Each day seems to go sooooo slooooow. And then it's Monday again, and none of the 'home improvement' items on my list are checked off! There's a lot going on right now: church camps, 4-H "fair". back to school, still working, volunteer ramping up, and personal crap... plus helping my brother put a new foundation under his old house-- definitely owe you some pics from that!! all my sibs plus all their +1s!! We have been working SO HARD, but also having so much fun.

Anyway, the point is, we've been living at Rock Haven for one whole year today. Wow. I'm more in love with this house/property than I was the very first day. Don't get me wrong, I feel like our DIY/redecorating should be further. But holy cow, we've had so much happen! Plus, the girls and their friends are loving the bunkroom, exploring the woods and even being goofs on our pond. We are loving our newly (almost)renovated kitchen, planning all the next steps, having the animals around, making the decisions to make this house our own, and how much we feel like a family whenever we are here (which, because of COVID, has been a lot!!).

I'm so excited for what the next year will bring, whether it's a lot or a little because-- life! But no matter, we are truly loving and cherishing our days together, and that's what really counts!
<![CDATA[Monkeys in the dining room]]>Sun, 07 Jun 2020 02:01:28 GMThttp://revealingrockhaven.com/blog/monkeys-in-the-dining-room
One of the things that has frustrated me the most about our new home is the lack of decent lighting in many rooms. One of the worst: the dining room. Don't get me wrong, I understand there is such a thing as mood lighting, but when you can't read the salad dressing label at a family dinner, it might be a problem. Our home has so much character, and the dining room also bothered me because the light fixture was so... blah.

I started looking for something I would love, something either vintage or just unique enough. I tried all the suggestions that I got for websites, but nothing did it for me. And my mind just kept going back to my mom's monkeys. See, that mama of mine is an interior decorator with amazing taste. She had this chandelier with monkeys holding 'candles' that I just loved. I honestly couldn't remember when it disappeared and never thought to ask when we were there hanging out as a family.
And finally, when I was too frustrated because I couldn't find anything I liked, I asked mom about the monkeys. And what do you know?? She still had them!! They were hanging when the tree fell on mom's house (another story for another time), and one of the monkeys has two legs with clean fractures. She totally redesigned her kitchen after the tree, and had no plans for the monkeys so they're MINE!! Oh I'm so in love. They've been on the back burner while the kitchen needed our attention, but I mentioned to Chad today that I was hoping to be able to put them up before the 15th and he decided today was the day :)

I know that everyone is going to have their own feelings about this fixture, I mean, even my own children think the monkeys come to life at night and jump down and cause a ruckus. But honestly, I don't care! They are fun, will give us plenty of light, and are WAAAAY more deserving of a place in this house. My sister and I even have a plan to make hats/costumes for them for each holiday!!
<![CDATA[My pets lay pretty presents]]>Thu, 21 May 2020 06:05:52 GMThttp://revealingrockhaven.com/blog/my-pets-lay-pretty-presents
Aren't they so pretty?? When we were dreaming of having a farm, my requirement was pretty eggs. Don't get me wrong, they all taste the same. But there's something about having an Easter Egg hunt every day, and looking at these beautiful eggs in the skelter, that makes me smile! I initially bought 3 olive eggers and 2 easter eggers, and then more beautiful birds were gifted to my daughters by my sister-in-laws mom. We are blessed to get to find these pretty eggs every single day. I can't ask for more from my sweet little birds!
<![CDATA[Kitchen glass cabinet lighting]]>Thu, 21 May 2020 05:39:51 GMThttp://revealingrockhaven.com/blog/kitchen-cabinet-lighting
There are lights in all our upper glass cabinets! It's so terribly exciting to watch this kitchen come together. Since these lights are in cabinets 9-10 feet in the air, we wanted to be able to turn them on and off with a switch. Luckily, there were plenty of switches in this kitchen! We ran the electrical wiring for one of them around the top of the room, putting outlets above the location where each bank of cabinets would go. **Between the cabinets, the wiring was tucked up above the planked ceiling. ** Once the cabinets were installed we used a hole saw to make a hole that the plug for LED lighting could be fished through. To be honest, having children with small hands came in VERY useful at this stage!! Then all that was left to do was remove the backing for the LED strips and install. Soon will come the finishing touches: filling in the holes so they don't show and routing the cords so they blend in the cabinets. Isn't this a fun little addition??
<![CDATA[Another new home-- for the birds!]]>Sat, 30 Nov 2019 05:00:00 GMThttp://revealingrockhaven.com/blog/another-new-home-for-the-chickens
So excited! Our old house has sold so it's time to start adding to our farm! With all the work we were doing between the two houses, we knew that adding farm animals just wasn't in the cards at that time. And as much as I've been wanting chickens, I didn't waiver from the resolve. We sold the house on the Monday before Thanksgiving, which means I actually waited more than a WEEK to get the chicken coop!! Seriously, you have no idea how much restraint I had to find. Can't wait to start getting it filled up!
<![CDATA[A hutch for the breakfast nook]]>Sun, 29 Sep 2019 04:00:00 GMThttp://revealingrockhaven.com/blog/a-hutch-for-the-breakfast-nook
More furniture!! Chad's already told me to stay off Marketplace, or he'll find a way to keep me off. We all know he's joking though, haha! I mean really, it was $100! I love this piece. I was looking for something very specific- a 'counter top' with plenty of storage, with a width that was less that the common width to fit on that wall, and I found it for $100 less than 40 minutes away! There is a repair or two that will need to be done, and it will definitely be a piece that will be painted, but even for now, how cute is this? A perfect spot for a coffee center plus any of the extra odds and ends that don't fit in the kitchen. I'm confident it will be a piece we treasure for years to come-- even if Chad thinks I'm a nut for getting it in the first place.
<![CDATA[A dresser for the girls]]>Sat, 14 Sep 2019 04:00:00 GMThttp://revealingrockhaven.com/blog/a-dresser-for-the-girls
And the search for furniture to fill the house continues! The girls needed a dresser to keep the non-hang-up clothes, so of course I turned to Facebook Marketplace. I'm so glad it exists! I mean, once in awhile you get a dud, but overall, how wonderful is an online garage sale??

So I found this dresser, the dimensions were great and it was less than 45 minutes away. I was hopeful that it was older and therefore good quality, but you never know online. When we got there to pick it up, amazing!! Not only was it solid wood, it was in absolutely lovely condition. I don't even need to paint it- as I had planned!!
Instead, all I did was use a wood cleaner/wax all over the exposed wood and replace the dated dresser pulls with some cute little black bin pulls. I really kind of love it!!
So now the dresser sits between the girls' rooms, and generally collects junk. But it looked really nice when first placed upstairs and hung our 'First Anniversary gift" above it. I mean, could you ask more for a $50 FB Marketplace find??
<![CDATA[A place to settle in...]]>Fri, 30 Aug 2019 04:00:00 GMThttp://revealingrockhaven.com/blog/a-place-to-settle-inPicture
I bought these hammock swings for the old house, and then realized I really didn't have a place to hang them! So when we moved in-- and had time to catch our breath-- it was one of the first things I wanted to do. The girls have loved having these hammocks out, they're a great place to read or chill or watch the beans grow. This spot is in the shade and not far outside the office window, so it's really perfect for the girls to run to when they're tired of the school room.

<![CDATA[Celebrating a new beginning]]>Fri, 19 Jul 2019 04:00:00 GMThttp://revealingrockhaven.com/blog/celebrating-a-new-beginning
This is it! Our new home, our new beginning. We loved our old home for 14+ years and it was good to us. And we are BEYOND excited about our new home and all the adventures it will bring! We have dubbed our new home Rock Haven, and we all have been bouncing off the walls since closing this afternoon. Our excitement is so great, in fact, that we loaded up mattresses and toiletry essentials and headed to our new home immediately after closing. We ate pizza and drank champagne (or sparkling grape juice) and camped out in the living area of our new home- all four of us, all excited, all ready to start the new chapter in our lives. Here's to many many amazing years and memories with our family at Rock Haven!!
